PORTERVILLE, California — October 19, 2026. Participating in county government no longer necessarily requires a trip to the board chambers. Tulare County says it began offering a telephone public-comment option on July 1, 2026, alongside in-person attendance, video viewing and written comments.
What changed
The county’s Board of Supervisors meetings page explains that residents can preregister through the county’s Public Comment Portal to speak remotely. The county says agendas and preregistration become available at least 72 hours before a meeting. People considering this option should open the latest meeting notice, confirm the registration process and check for schedule changes.
Different ways to participate
Attend: Verify the meeting location and time on the agenda and visit in person. Speak by telephone: Preregister through the county’s official portal, then follow its instructions for the selected meeting. Watch: Use the county’s video option if you want to observe without speaking. Write: Review the current instructions for submitting a written comment before the meeting.
The county describes the board’s regular meetings as Tuesday sessions, generally beginning at 9 a.m. But the annual schedule may include exceptions or cancellations. No resident should assume that a meeting is happening on an unscheduled date.
Why this matters in the southern San Joaquin Valley
For Porterville-area households, transportation and work schedules can make an in-person county meeting difficult. More than one participation route can help residents follow countywide decisions and raise concerns that are within the board’s jurisdiction. The county board should not be confused with the City of Porterville’s separate municipal government.
Before commenting on a specific item
Locate the agenda item number, read the staff recommendation, identify the decision being requested and check whether it concerns a county service or land outside incorporated city limits. After the meeting, use adopted minutes and official records to confirm what actually occurred.
